Install WordPress Using FTP Filezilla

WordPress is the most widely used platform in the world. Therefore, you can install WordPress through many different ways: Install via Spaculus, or through HTTP, FTP. In this article, I will guide you to install WordPress using Filezilla. You should only use this way just in case you can not install it automatically (via Spaculus). This guide assumes you are using Cpanel, and on Goddady hosting.

First, you need to download FileZilla software to your computer, this is the software that will connect to your hosting through the FTP protocol. After the download is complete you install it on your computer. Also, you need to download the latest WordPress to install on the host.

Find the FTP account

You click FTP Accounts:

Below you will see the Special FTP Accounts section. Click Configure FTP Client to get the information:

  • FTP Username: FTP Login
  • FTP Sever: Fill in the “Host” input of the Filezilla software
  • FTP & explicit FTPS port: Connect port

Use FileZilla to connect

Open Filezilla, select Site Manager as shown below to add account connection

Click on New Site, fill in the following information on the right:

  • Host: The IP address of the host (In Cpanel look in the left sidebar to see) or you fill in the main domain of the host (in step 1)
  • Logon Type: select Normal
  • User: Type the user in step 1
  • Password: Cpanel password

Click Connect

If the connection succeeds then it will display the status line as shown below:

Delete Old WordPress (If you have failed to get WordPress installed)

Note: If you haven’t installed WordPress then skip this step. If you want to  reinstall it (or the installation failed) you need to delete all the data before installing WordPress

In the Remote Site column, you open the public-html directory, your WordPress data will be in this directory.

Then press Ctrl + A to select all, right click and select Delete

You wait a moment (about 10 minutes) until it shows Empty Directory Listing:

Upload WordPress

Once you have downloaded the latest version of WordPress, you unzip it. The directory after unpacking will have the files and folders as shown below. Our next task will be to upload all of these files to the host

On the right side of FileZilla (Localhost), you select the directory of WordPress as follow:

In the left column of Filezilla, you must be in the public-html directory

Then select all files in the left column of FileZilla, right-click and choose Upload:

Continue waiting 10-15 minutes for it to upload

Create database, username & connect to each other

You return to Cpanel in Hosting, then to MySQL Database:

Create a new database, enter your own name, then click Create Database:

You click Go Back

Scroll down to the MySQL User section, you will create a new user. Enter the new login name and password and click on Create User

Next, in the Add User To Database section, add the username you just created to the database and click Add

Check the box All Privileges and click MAKE CHANGES

You are done, we will move on to the next step

Configure & Install WordPress

Now you go to the website you want to install. If you do correctly steps above, your website is now running and it will inform you to select the language and set some basic information for the website.

Select English and then click Continue

The following message will appear, you click Let’s Go

You will fill in some information:

  • Database: The name of the database you created in the previous step
  • Username + Pass: You created in the previous step

Click Submit

If successful, it will show the following message, click Run the install

You will enter some information about WordPress installation such as: site title, admin login + password, email. Then click Install WordPress

  • Site Title: Enter anything, can be changed later
  • Username: Webmaster login name
  • Password: Make it hard to guess
  • Email: Enter your email

It will announce the successful message as follows:

That’s it, you click Login to log your site administrator.
